How Self Doubt is Ruining YOU! (How to fix it)

What is it?

Self Doubt is the lack of confidence in an individual’s self and their capabilities.

This will limit the beliefs in yourself and it will prevent opportunities from arising!


How to identify

Figuring out if you doubt yourself can be a hard thing to do. No one is the same and everyone has their limits and beliefs.

Next time you have the chance to prove yourself in anyway, thoughts that are processed due to self doubt may sound like this:

  • I think I will fail.
  • I am scared people will judge me.
  • What if I’m not good enough.

These aren’t the only thoughts, but these examples have popped up into my head countless amounts of times in the past!


Overcoming destructive thoughts

The secret to overcoming and preventing a thought process that is surrounded by self doubt is to find the root and rip it out!

What I mean by this is that when you are given the opportunity to do something that will test you and your skills. You must find out why you are self doubting yourself.

For example, you have been offered the chance to compete against others in something you enjoy doing.

If you are telling yourself that everyone is too good for you, or that you haven’t got enough experience to overcome other individuals then you need to flip it on its head.

Turn that negative into a positive.

This can be done by;

  • Telling yourself you have developed the skills necessary to do well.
  • Realising that you were offered the opportunity for a reason.
  • Thinking about the task ahead, not the individuals by your side. (tunnel vision)

Preventative measures

  1. Don’t beat yourself up about it.
    A common reaction to self doubt is to lash out at yourself and become angry, hoping to move forward and get over this fear.

    Unfortunately, that doesn’t work. In order to allow the chance to become more optimist and confident, you must be kind to yourself and use constructive feedback.

    Identify what went wrong and brainstorm ideas on how to handle a certain situation better. Over time, you will become more optimistic at improving yourself!
  2. People really don’t care that much about what you think or say.
    Believe it or not, when you start to think that others will judge you based on your actions, words or thoughts, you give self doubt a strong case to stick around and bug you!!

    If this happens to you, remind yourself that people don’t take concern to you too much with what you think or say.

    Every individual is caught up in their own lives worrying about themselves, their families, bills and so much more! You will be their last thought… If they even do think about you in the first place!
  3. DO NOT compare yourself to others, it’s a trap!
    It’s very easy to see an individual on social media posting pictures of your ideal situation and life. They might be where you want to be and seeing this can honestly crush your will and this will create endless issues with self doubt.

    I found that comparing myself to others was an unfair judgement on my behalf. I don’t know what they have been through, I don’t understand their position and most importantly.. I am not them!

    Instead, I suggest that you compare yourself to YOU. This is so you can see how far you have come and that will give you a great judgement on how much you have grown over the months and/or years.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
    Reaching out to someone can be very hard. It isn’t easy to express your deep, inner emotions to yourself, let alone another person.

    Although it may be scary, it can be the difference between overcoming self doubt and crumbling to it’s feet.

    The beauty of speaking aloud about your struggles is that it is now in the open. The thought becomes a reality and now it will be more real, you can take active steps (like the ones above) to start overcoming self doubt and growing as a human being, to the person you wish to become!
